Understanding your rights and obligations during parenting and maternity leave is crucial for both employees and employers. Here's a simplified overview to guide you through the key points:
Parental Leave: Up to 36 months available until the child turns 8, with the first 12 months before the child is 3.
Salary Policy During Maternity Leave: Employees need to be paid their full salary, minus a portion paid by the health insurance. This can be fully reclaimed by employers including social security contributions from the health insurance.
Part-Time Work: Employees may work part-time during parental leave.
Employment Protection: Safeguarded against dismissal under the Employment Protection Act during leave.
Maternity Leave: Includes 6 weeks pre-delivery (optional work) and 8 weeks post-delivery (no work allowed), with special rules for various circumstances.
Employees are entitled to 20 working days of annual leave plus 9 public holidays. However employers most commonly offer 25 days annual leave
In Germany, the exceptional quality of the healthcare system often means that many businesses forego providing an extra health insurance plan.
